Clinical Component

Why medical professionals?
While lack of awareness and skills poses a credible threat, another significant impediment to improved SRH in Pakistan is the lack of access to quality SH services.  Medical practitioners often lack the necessary knowledge and skills required to treat SH issues effectively.  Furthermore, the notion of client centered care and counseling is often neglected which prevents the creation of an enabling environment for clients seeking health care.  In addition, due to repressive societal norms, clients often lack the necessary confidence and comfort in discussing SH issues openly which inevitably affects health care treatment.  Without proper training, health care providers may also shy away from discussions concerning sexuality because they feel unable to handle complex issues (e.g., sexual abuse, conflicts about sexual orientation, sexual dysfunction etc.) that can arise during such discussions. This may lead to several problems such as incomplete sexual history and misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment, lack of client adherence, difficulties in contact tracing and partner management.

Objectives and strategies
Since there is a shortage of qualified medical professionals and health workers equipped to effectively manage SH issues exists, Aahung aims to work with medical universities, nursing schools, and government health worker programmes to ensure that their students receive quality training on these issues. By targeting teaching institutions, Aahung hopes to achieve systems level change, so that this information continues to be taught effectively for generations to come. The long term vision is to see all medical university graduates, nursing college graduates and graduates of government health worker programmes, such as lady health workers (Ministry of Health) and female welfare workers (Ministry of Population Welfare), sensitized and equipped with the information and skills to manage SH issues more effectively. To achieve this, Aahung will advocate with relevant government ministries and private university administrators to ensure that SH management is taught more effectively.
